The N-3B parka was developed by the U.S. Air Force in the late 1950s as part of its cold-weather clothing lineup, specifically for personnel stationed in extremely cold environments, such as the Arctic and other high-latitude regions. The N-3B was designed to provide maximum protection against freezing temperatures, high winds, and snow, and became a standard issue for aircrew members, ground crew, and other military personnel exposed to harsh winter conditions.

The parka was made with a durable, water-resistant nylon outer shell and featured a thick, insulating layer of synthetic or down fill for warmth. One of the most distinctive features of the N-3B was its large, fur-lined hood, which helped protect against freezing winds and could be adjusted with a drawstring for a snug fit. The jacket also included ribbed knit cuffs and a storm flap over the front zipper to keep out cold air. It had large, utilitarian pockets for storing gear and personal items.

Primarily olive drab in color, the N-3B parka became a popular item in civilian fashion after military surplus became widely available in the 1960s and 1970s. Its rugged, oversized design, warmth, and practicality made it a staple of military-inspired streetwear, and it remains a classic winter jacket today.
