While the original N-1 deck jacket did not come with a hood, there were modified versions of the jacket produced post-WWII, including some that incorporated a removable or fixed hood for added warmth and protection. These modifications were often seen in later versions of the jacket used during the Korean War and into the 1950s. The hoods were typically lined with fur or fleece and designed to provide added warmth and wind protection for sailors working on deck in extreme cold conditions.
The inclusion of a hood made the N-1 jacket even more functional in harsh environments, particularly on the cold decks of naval ships in the North Atlantic or the Pacific during winter operations.
In civilian fashion, N-1 jackets (with or without hoods) became popular in the 1960s and 1970s due to their rugged military aesthetic, and the hooded versions were seen as particularly stylish and practical for cold-weather outerwear.
