The N-1 jacket, introduced in 1944, was a military-issued cold-weather garment developed by the U.S. Navy during World War II. Designed to protect sailors and ground crew working in the harsh, freezing conditions of the Pacific and Arctic theaters, the N-1 became an essential part of the Navy’s cold-weather gear. Its primary function was to provide warmth while maintaining mobility during long hours spent outdoors in extreme conditions.
The jacket was made from a durable, olive-drab or khaki cotton "jungle cloth" outer shell, treated for water resistance. Its most distinctive feature was the thick alpaca wool lining, which provided exceptional insulation and warmth. The N-1 also featured a high collar, ribbed cuffs, and a storm flap over the zipper to protect against wind and cold. The front pockets were large and functional, designed to store essential items. A Navy blue version was also available before the olive color was standardized.
Though initially designed for military personnel, the N-1 jacket became a symbol of rugged American style after the war. It influenced post-war fashion, particularly in workwear and outerwear, and was adopted by civilians, particularly in the 1950s. The N-1’s iconic, utilitarian design, with its distinctive wool lining and robust construction, continues to be celebrated today as an enduring piece of military outerwear, favored for both style and warmth.
