CWU-36/P “Blue Angels”
The CWU-36/P jacket is a type of flight jacket designed for use by U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy personnel, primarily during the 1980s and 1990s. It is part of the Cold Weather Uniform (CWU) series, specifically designed for pilots and aircrew operating in colder conditions.
The CWU-36/P is the summer version of the CWU-45/P flight jacket, providing enough warmth, comfort, and durability. It was part of the military's effort to modernize flight gear for better protection against harsh climates while maintaining flexibility and ease of movement for aircrews. The jacket became a standard issue for many military personnel, especially those operating in colder environments or during night flights.
The CWU-36/P is made from a durable, water-resistant nylon outer shell with a polyester insulation for warmth. It is typically lined with a soft, comfortable nylon fabric. The jacket has a front zipper closure, knit cuffs and waistband for a snug fit, and several utility pockets, including a pencil pocket on the sleeve. It usually comes in a sage green color, in line with standard military flight gear. The jacket is lightweight and designed to be worn in moderate to cold conditions, offering both mobility and protection against wind and light rain.
The CWU-36/P remains an iconic piece of military flight gear, prized for its functionality, durability, and association with the high-performance demands of aircrews.
